2012 Chilling economic forecast for UK and Europe

The spectre of another recession continues to loom large over Europe, according to a number of leading economists.

A BBC poll among 34 UK and European economists who regularly advise the Bank of England revealed that the “vast majority ” believe recession will return to Europe in 2012.


The crisis in the euro zone will be at the heart of the economic turbulence – most of those polled consider its break-up to be a 30-40% possibility, while 20% reckon its present 17-member format will change.

Focusing on the UK, the economists believe that interest rates will stay at their current historic low of 0.5% for the year.
